Interview with Stand UP Comedian Charles McBee at Gotham Comedy Club
Written by Jennifer Gable
How 1 Comic Got to Help Create a TV Show Just by Auditioning
Jennifer: So thanks for doing this interview with me. You perform at NYC Comedy Clubs all over?
Charles: Ya, I mean, I get around. I’m a comedy floozy.
Jennifer: How long have you been doing stand-up?
Charles: It’ll be 9 years in March.
Jennifer: And you currently write for a Show on MTV?
Charles: Ya, currently.
Jennifer: How did that transpire?
Charles: It was kinda unorthodox. I didn’t submit a packet or anything. I actually auditioned for another show on MTV, and I didn’t get it. But they liked my writing.
We just think you have a face for behind the camera.
Jennifer: Haha, they did not. You’re not unattractive or anything.
Charles: I think you’re coming onto me right now.
That was for Joking Off, this is for Uncommon Sense.
So I started with them last year. It’s the same show, but a different concept. For MTV2.
Jennifer: So looking at your jokes, it seems like you do a range of jokes. Clean. Different topics.
Charles: I write whatever I think is funny.
Jennifer: Do you get inspiration from real life and based on truth? What inspires you to write?
Charles: I hear some Comics complain about having to write. But for me, it’s therapeutic. And something I really like doing. And do to like to calm down.
So I write a lot. It’s just something I do in my free time in general. It’s just something I have to do all the time.
Jennifer: I try to write once a day on twitter. And sometimes for me, it just appears out of thin air and I don’t have control over it.
Do you have a special out?
Charles: I’m going to be doing an album sometimes at the end of this year. Right now, it’s just TV appearances and stuff like that.
Jennifer: So you do a lot of political humor?
Charles: I do some political humor too because it’s something I pay close attention too. But I definitely don’t just do that. I don’t want to be known as just a political Comedian. When people start out there always trying to copy their favorite Comedian. And then eventually you get out of that.
Jennifer: So how did you come up with your show?
Charles: We’re kinda a small team. We go over what’s going on in the news. And pop culture. And then just design a show around that. It’s just me & another guy.
It’s called Uncommon Sense Live on MTV2. And it’s also online. There’s a lot of channels now out there for creative people to get their stuff out online.
Jennifer: I’ll have to check out your new Show. Thanks for doing this interview and talking w/ me!
