The relatively new Sony Pictures Entertainment, Jerry Seinfeld’s most watched online series ‘Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee’ is available for sale in the market. The series first began in 2012 on Crackle. It has Mr. Seinfeld conversing candidly with friends such as Jon Stewart and Tina Fey. In Emmy Awards 2016, it is nominated. The show comprising of about 50 episodes has got above 100 million views.
Mr. Seinfeld is switching
Contract of Mr. Seinfeld is about to be expired. He is feeling unstable at Sony since June. In that month, the studio parted with Steve Mosko, the TV chairman and long time ally of Mr. Seinfeld. Many people talked about the condition of anonymity for the purpose of protecting this relation.
Representatives of Mr. Seinfeld are negotiating with Hulu and Netflix about taking distributions of ‘Comedians in Cars getting coffee’.
Sony said in a statement ‘ Comedians in Cars’ has been a great part of Crackle’s programming lineup for years, and we look forward to continuing our relationship with Jerry Seinfeld.’
Sony has produced the series in collaboration with Mr. Seinfeld. Sony would like to continue earning money under any options that are feasible. In the current situation, Sony sells the show itself in an effective manner.
Series takeover plans
Two possible ways are under discussion. This is disclosed by people, who are briefed on the future plans. According to one deal, Netflix is going to buy library of all episodes of ‘Comedians in Cars getting coffee’. Another outside network is also on the list of buyers. The new episodes will continue showing on Crackle.
The upcoming ninth season of ‘Comedians in Cars getting Coffee’ will show its premiere on Crackle in a few months. Hulu, Netflix and Mr. Seinfeld’s representative steered clear to give any comments on the takeover.
Loss of ‘Comedians in Cars getting Coffee’ will directly affect Crackle. The series is its biggest success. If Mr. Seinfeld says good-bye to the company and decides to quit. It may have a tough time. It will be quite difficult to get top comic actors sign the new series.
Why Seinfeld is losing interest
Mr. Seinfeld is convinced to take up outside offers because of Sony and its history with him. He has helped them make money over the years, through his reruns. In April this year, Hulu bought old episodes in a deal for $160 million, which is surely a handsome amount.
Whatever is going on with the actor switching to another company, the series will hopefully have equally talented actors to entertain viewers. Let’s see how things turn out to be. Who becomes the substitute of Mr. Seinfeld and how he performs in the long run. Competition is high and the popularity of ‘Comedians in Cars getting Coffee’ can be at stake. But, it is possible only when the newcomer is not as competent as expected. The abrupt change in performer will impact the show in many ways. Only time will tell what the future holds.
