Dustin Chafin New Comedy Album Stop Telling People That
Written by Josh Rosen
So I hear you’re in a new HBO series. That’s great!
Yep, it’s called Crashing and it really focuses on Stand Up in New York City and the struggle that everyone goes through. It is written and produced by Judd Apatow and Pete Holmes.
Wow! That’s amazing.
Yea it is pretty cool. Pete actually used to bark for me when he was first starting out. I ran the Boston Comedy Club and we developed a good relationship. He reached out to me to do an episode and I was more than happy to do it for him.
Very cool that you guys had a previous relationship like that. He’s paying you back for helping him out.
It was nice to be asked definitely. Shows how tight the comedy community really can be.
That’s so awesome that you mentored him.
Yea, I’ve helped many comedians get stage time before the other clubs. Aziz Ansari, Pete Davidson, Mike Lawrence, Nate Bargatze, Mike Vecchione, Joe DeRosa and many more. It made me start coaching and mentoring comics I offer one on one sessions.
So I know the show is based on Stand Up in New York City, but what exactly is the premise?
It’s about Pete’s early days as a comic paying dues in NYC. It really does a great job honoring the struggle of being a comedian in New York City. Sort of like the movie Funny People but in NYC not LA. No one ever really captures the essence of Stand Up. With Seinfeld, Jerry was already an established comedian with a nice apartment on the Upper West Side. Louis CK’s show is more about his life than the struggle of being a comedian. No one really talks about the struggle, that’s what this show captures.
And who are you in the show?
I play myself. I actually performed in front of extras, which was pretty cool. I did my set but essentially a mock version of it for the show.
When can we see it?
I believe it airs in the beginning of next year.
I heard you also have a new album coming out?
Oh yea! I did it at New York Comedy Club because I love the room and it’s where I started out. I started out as a busboy there. I would bus, cook and clean for stage time. I thought it would be a perfect place to do my album.
Stop Telling People That. Comedy Records produced it.
When can we buy it?
The release is August 12th. It’s available on Spotify, iTunes all those good things. And I’m having a prerelease album party on August 11th at Greenwich Village Comedy Club.
That’s exciting man.
Yea, it was time to do a professional album finally. It really culminates all my hard work in stand up comedy. Some of the themes in there are a little bit different form what I usually talk about.
What are some of the bits?
Being a missionary in South America and I talk about when I performed comedy in Iraq. We got shot at flying in a Black Hawk helicopter. That wasn’t funny. The show was funny, but that wasn’t. Kind of makes you realize that doing comedy is absolutely nothing in comparison to war. One show we hid in a bunker for 20 minutes and then went out and performed for the troops. That is the highlight of my career. Performing for the troops and making them laugh and forget about their situation for a while.
Wow and I thought boos were rough. You literally got shot at.
Yea it was nuts. Sort of like playing in Jersey haha. These guys have absolute nothing; they might not even be there next week. So to share in some laughter with them, that’s just the best thing I could do as a comedian.
