Scenes from All Jane Comedy Festival 2016
Written by Joseph Santiago
I am here in Portland to cover the All Jane Comedy Festival and after that recording a Saturday Afternoon podcast with Page Hurwitz: who is the executive producer of NBC’s. If you go through the festival program the previous night, you might notice that I am the only man that was named in it. Apart from this I also realize that my privileges here as a journalist supplant and cancel out my straight white cis maleness that would have precluded my participation in this place.
All Jane was originally called All Jane No Dick Festival just for the sake of emphasis, however, you will not see me complaining or questioning about men’s rights here. I will leave that task to the folks at Portlandia: who released their very own satirical take on men’s rights yesterday.
The home base for All Jane Comedy Festival was Curious Comedy Theater: that sits just around the corner of MLK Boulevard. With one show on Wednesday, two shows on Thursday four shows on each Friday and Saturday and two more events on Sunday.
Dinah Foley hosted Thursday’s showcase and had introduced Andie Main as host of Revolution Comedy. Danielle Perez described herself as “aggressively fat yet still judgy”, she is from Los Angeles and hosts a monthly show there. Candy Lawrence joked that her grandmother gave her a book “Act Like A Lady, Think Like a Man” when she told her family that she was a lesbian. Apart from this Maggie Maye and Kate Willet also joined that show and joked around with the audience.
