THE STAND UP COMEDIAN’S GUIDE TO SURVIVAL
Being a comedian is an inborn talent and if you don’t have that talent, what extent of study will you need to become a comedian? The answer to this question is addressed in this movie. It is a mixture of reality and fiction with a huge part of comedy.
James Buckley from The Inbetweeners is playing a fictional character of a UK based person named James Mullinger. He has a dream of becoming a standup comedian. This is a film full of entertainment for the comedy lovers. It will explain the ups and downs Mullinger face while becoming a successful comedian.
You will see the hero, Mullinger, performing in different yet not so good platforms in the first half of the film. Luisa Omielan and Richard Sandling are the companions of Mullinger in the film and they are comedians in real life as well. So in those performances, he faces awkward situations like he gets booed and shelled with some soft fruits on the stage. Apart from all that, the hero has the writing job for GQ that’s why he has a lovely house to live. But soon he was advised to quit this job too. The story continues in this manner.
Next, Mullinger gets the order of interviewing some famous comedians for a magazine and these orders are given by the editor (Paul Kaye) who is himself a funny character. For Mullinger, it was something degrading but soon he realizes that it is an opportunity to get career tips from the well-known comedians.
In an interview with Omid Djalili who is playing himself in this film, Mullinger is suggested that if you face failure every time, this is a sign where you should stop. But here comes the twist, the story does not agree with this statement. It highlights the importance of trying again and again even if you don’t have that talent to you naturally. Mullinger is seen as a person who is not judged on his abilities to follow his dreams, his ability to pick himself and get down again.
This film depicts a side of the society in which the incompetence of Mullinger as a comedian is easy to believe than the hidden talents he has. Mullinger is seen passing from one stage of disgrace to the other stage. A twist came in the film when Mullinger got robbed in a desert in California. He hits it by amusing his fellows at a dinner after that incident. After some time, in L.A. he made his audience shout with laughter at a show. This film also has Kevin Eldon who is a real life comedian and he is playing the role of Mullinger’s chauffeur.
After this trip from the L.A, the hero gets his first break at a festival named Montreal’s Just for Laughs. The film is delivering a message of following your dreams to the audiences. No matter what you want to become a comedian or a prime minister, this film gives the message of having faith in yourself.
