Born and educated in New York, Dave Attell used his time earning a degree in Communications at NYU to figure out what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. As the Communications degree would imply, he wanted to communicate with the world in one form or another.
After graduating, he tried a few different forms of communication, but thankfully his time performing stand up comedy has really lit a flame that has yet to go out.
As with many comedians, Dave had to work his way up by taking some rather menial day jobs to pay the rent and perform at some of New York’s prestigious comedy clubs in the evenings.
After Dave paid his dues and got his name out there in the New York comedy scene, he eventually scored his first television performance on VH1’s StandUp Spotlight. While it’s intimidating to make a bigtime TV appearance, Dave was especially nervous standing next to some of the other upandcoming talent on the stage; other comedians who participated in the shoot included Lewis Black, Wanda Sykes, and Margaret Cho.
While VH1 was certainly an incredible opportunity to jump off the stage and onto television, his real break came when he was offered a spot on NBC’s Saturday Night Live during the 1993 1994 season as both a performer and a writer.
As you can imagine, Dave Attell’s time on SNL gave him an incredible launching pad. HBO took notice and in 1995, the subscription premium cable channel offered him his own 60 minutes special as part of the HBO Comedy Showcase. This led to multiple other appearances on the network where he had the opportunity to perform with Louis C.K. and Dave Chappelle.
Today you’ll likely see him making regular appearances on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and his own show on Comedy Central called Comedy Underground with Dave Attell.
While his onscreen performances are simply incredible, his stage presence during his standup routines is simply something every passionate comedy fan has to experience for themselves.
Dave Attell being NYC based he performs nightly at comedy shows in NYC around the country and the world. He loves to perform at the Comedy Cellar, The Stand NYC, Eastville Comedy Club, Stand UP NY when spending time in New York City.
