Interviewed Stand Up Comedian Jeffrey Gurian at New York Comedy Club in the East Village

jeffrey-gurian

1. What other jobs did you do before starting stand up comedy?

Well, I tried getting a job as a waiter but there were none available so I went to Dental School and became a Cosmetic Dentist, and then later a Clinical Prof. at N.Y.U. in Oral Medicine and Oro-Facial Pain, while I was writing for big stars like Rodney Dangerfield, Joan Rivers, Jerry Lewis, Phil Hartman, George Wallace, Richard Belzer, and many Friars Club roasts.

2. How did you know you wanted to be a comedian?

My parents were typical Jewish parents from The Bronx, who at first refused to let me be a doctor. They said, “Don’t shame us that way!” I had to hide in my room to do my homework, and they would bang on the door and say “Come out. We know you’re studying in there. Stop it. You’ll be too successful!” I finally got them to give in. Actually, my grandfather owned a nightclub called “The Red Mill” and I was introduced to show biz at a very early age. My father was a big comedy fan and took me to see comedy movies when I was a kid, and at 12 years old I was already writing comedy for the amusement of my friends. read more

Lenny Marcus

We sat down with Lenny Marcus after his comedy show at the legendary Comic Strip Live on the Upper East Side.

What do you wish someone had told you about show business before you entered it?
How little it paid, even in NYC.

What was your process in developing this special?
I don’t have one. Thanks for rubbing it in. I have 3 CD’s though for sale on LennyMarcus.com.

Do you think your stand-up has changed a lot over the years?
Yes it has gotten better, smarter and I’ve gotten a lot better on stage.

What happens if they don’t laugh?
Just go on to the next joke.

How often do you perform comedy per week?
I average 30+ NYC spots a month, so it comes out to over once a day. read more

I was very excited to interview Brian Scott McFadden. I saw Brian perform stand up when I was eighteen at Comic Strip Live. He was absolutely hilarious. His set always stuck with me. So here I am, many years later, interviewing him at Comic Strip. His credits include: The Late Show with David Letterman, and The Late Late Night with Craig Ferguson. Interview with Richard Tienken The Owner of World Famous Comic Strip Live

judah friedlander, Richard Tienken

Richard Tienken

I just started stand up comedy and had no clue what to do. One comic suggested I audition for Late Night at Comic Strip Live. Comic Strip is the oldest comedy club in New York. I had seen performances there when I was a teenager. I was terrified because this was going to be the seventh time I had ever performed stand up. I got there and found out that there was a panel of judges who will ‘roast’ each of us and let us know if we pass (get hired) in front of a packed room. My heart went in my throat. I went up, and miraculously did well. I had no expectations. One of the judges asked how long I had I been doing stand up, I said this was my seventh performance. Then Richie said, “You’re passed.” I’ve been working on jokes there ever since. read more

How artists succeed through adversity, with Nick Whitmer

Note From Me:

Another day of self-doubt and discontent. Another day of societal chaos. Another day of propaganda. Another day of world-wide-violence. Well, just another fucking Saturday. I’m sitting here in a touristy coffee shop, on the corner of MacDougal and Bleecker Street, with my good friend Nick Whitmer to discuss his life in the world of Standup Comedy. To set the mood for you: it’s freezing cold outside, the streets are cluster-fucked with obnoxious drunks and the barista is a fucking asshole. Ergo, this leaves a lot of room for optimism in this interview. Self-awareness is a bright disease and Nick has it. I’m excited to hear some genuine thoughts and opinions. Let us begin. read more

He is known as The World Champ, actor, comedian Judah Friedlander is AWESOME. Not only is he a excellent comedian, actor, he’s the world champ of the world. Judah can be seen nightly performing at most of the local comedy clubs in NYC.

Judah is mainly known for his role on the NBC hit 30 Rock where he played the character of Frank Rossitano. As well as such films as Wet Hot, American Summerer, American Splendor, and The Wrestler. Though before all the film fame he was a hard working stand up comic, and he quickly became one of my favorites. The first time I saw Judah perform was back in 2001 at Comic Strip Live on the Upper East Side, when I first started to promote stand up comedy. What caught my attention was how great he is working the crowd. After the shows he would greet all the fans and he’s a really is a genuine nice person. He would really take the time and talk to everyone and was good at marketing himself. I knew then he was something special and he quickly became one of my favorite comedians. read more
