Rest in Peace WILLIAM STEPHENSON

Stand UP Comedian William Stephenson he has passed away.

He was only 62 years ago.

With sadness in our hearts, and shocking news is true: I was hanging out with him last month at the Comedy Cellar. He always had a big smile and always greeted me with warmness.

I  found out the details of his death from one of our former writers Bryan Murray on his Facebook profile. He wrote this.

“Just over three years ago I wrote a hand full of articles for Joseph Santiago. I was given the opportunity to interview comedians as a comedy fan. Will was there for the first time Jessica and I ever saw the live comedy in New York at the Comedy Cellar. read more

Interview with Comedian Monroe Martin at The New York Comedy Club

Monroe Martin It was at the New York Comedy Cub that we met up with one of our favorite comedians Monroe Martin after one of his comedy shows in NYC, which is located in the Kips Bay section in Manhattan. It was a Friday night and the New York Comedy Club was completely sold out. There was this amazing energy filled in the room with people from around the world. 1. What other jobs did Monroe Martin do before starting stand up comedy? I had too many Jobs. I was a Peer Educator for Planned Parenthood. I worked at Spirit of Halloween, McDonald’s, Philadelphia Youth Network, Tower Perrin, City Year, A charter School/ summer camp, The Philadelphia Zoo, a Security Company, a telemarketer, and Dave and Buster’s. 2. How did you know you wanted to be a comedian? Honestly, I didn’t dream of being a comedian. I didn’t think it was something I could accomplish so why try, right? My friends were the first people that thought I was funny. They called me stupid all the time. Most people would take offense to that, but I didn’t. Calling someone stupid when they say something hilarious is the second highest comment. The highest is genius. I would find my self-writing down topics and points to bring up during the conversation. At the time I did know I was writing a set. Between making my friends laugh I would make some of my foster parents laugh. One of my foster moms and I would watch Coming To The Stage on BET. Which is a comedy competition.   One day we were watching the show, and she said: “I could see you doing something like that one day.” I blew it off. The comics on the show were so funny I could never be one of them. There was one specific comic I thought was hilarious. I won’t mention his name. Fast forward to the summer, I have graduated high school and I have no real plans of going to college. I just wanted to hang out and go with the flow of life. One morning my friend and I were sitting on his front porch cracking jokes, and a garbage truck goes by, and the guy I thought was super funny was on the back of the trash truck. I tried to get his attention, by yelling “yo man you’re funny as hell” he wanted to ignore me, but I kept until he acknowledged me. Looking back I was being extra, but it was worth it because that changed my perspective on comedians. I felt like I could actually be a comic. I started comedy two years after that. 3. If you weren’t doing comedy, what would you be doing? I would probably be fat as shit with a city job. 4. Where are some of your favorite places to perform? I like The Knitting Factory, Stress Factory, Comedy Connection in Rhode Island, Denver Funny Bone. 5. Who are some of your favorite up-and-comers in the comedy world? If you pay your bills off of comedy, I don’t consider you up and coming. If we are talking about comics that aren’t famous yet, then I have a long list, but here are some. I like Chloe Hilliard, Derek Gaines, Dave Temple, Ian Finance, etc.

We met up with the Harvard Graduate turned professional stand up comedian Harrison Greenbaum neighborhood of Greenwich Village. He was getting ready to perform at the Mecca of comedy The Comedy Cellar.

What other jobs did Harrison Greenbaum do before starting stand up comedy?

I’ve been doing magic since I was a kid, so I was making money as a magician at birthdays and bar mitzvahs since I was around 12.  (Always weird when the bar mitzvah magician is the same age as the kids he’s entertaining!)  In high school, I even spent a summer as a restaurant magician, doing magic every Saturday at a Mexican restaurant in Long Island called Pancho’s (which is still there!). read more

Interview with Stand Up Comedian Aaron Berg

Aaron Berg at the Stand NYC

After attending comedy on a fairly regular basis throughout the few years my wife and I had been living in New York, there was one main thing I noticed. It can get expensive. In most cases, it is treated as a “night out” an occasional event that is looked upon much like a concert or Broadway show. One of these things you plan around, maybe save up a little beforehand. That was something I definitely did not take into account before wanting to take in as much live stand up comedy as possible. It didn’t take long before it was heavily suggested to me by the more responsible half, to find new ways to attend comedy that wouldn’t hurt our accounts. Luckily, New York also has a plethora of shows, especially during the regular week nights, which are far more affordable, sometimes even free. We found ourselves regularly attending show at The Stand Restaurant and Comedy Club in the Gramercy area.
At one of the many shows we had seen there was Aaron Berg, who I have heard on various podcasts in which he plugged a free show at the club called Frantic!. Frantic! is a free show every Monday night at 10pm, the final show at the club that night so it can go for a while. One available Monday we attended the show, and it was absolutely hysterical. Since then, I have returned multiple times to Frantic! and became a fan of Aaron and his other projects as well as the amazing feats that I got to discuss briefly with him about.
Aaron and I stood outside a chilly January 11th night. This, like most Frantic! shows offered both pretty recognizable names and some newer comedians. On this night it was Aaron, Noah Gardenswartz, Aida Rodriguez, Dan Soder, Subhah Agarwal, Dave Smith, Graham Kay, Luis J. Gomez, Janelle James, a drop in by Judah Friedlander, Alex Pavone, and Bill Dawes playing the character of Grigori. When we could, Aaron and I would run outside to talk as he puffed on his cigar checking the times to jet back in to light and host the show.
You’ve had some “questionable professions” prior to stand up. What made you decide to get into stand up?
“I had done a movie in Canada and thought, ‘I’d just be a movie star, this will be easy’ it was ‘Detroit Rock City’ I had a small part. And thought that it would blow me up but didn’t so I went to an Amateur Night at Yuk Yuks in Toronto it went really well.I mean, the comedy was horrible thinking it seemed easy but then just sucked for a while.”
What got you first interested in acting?
“I think I always just wanted to be a movie star and just wanted to be on tv I think. But then, once I discovered stand up the exact opposite thing happened, ‘F*#k TV I wanna be an artist.’”
Some could look now and see there are definite “comedy purists” that do fall very close to the ‘wanna be an artist’mentality. Do you feel you hold true to that or has it changed throughout the years?
“I feel now, I’m just really happy creating constantly. No matter what it is, as long as I’m creating.”
And that definitely shows in what you have been putting out there especially recently. Releasing two books, constant stand up, and being a part of Hulu Original series “24 Hour Rental”.
“I feel like the stuff that I do would be more suited to someone who is really famous like ‘Oh, he wrote another book that silly Ryan Goseling’” read more
